First-line management, the one rarely prepared for

You promote the best technician and ask them to arbitrate. The step is steep, and that is when good people are lost — on both sides.

Four moves, and nothing more

Management is not learned through theoretical models but through four moves repeated until they become natural. Training covering twelve installs none.

Setting a checkable expectation

« Be more rigorous » is not an expectation. « The report by Friday noon, with the three indicators » is.

Holding a short, regular check-in

Fifteen minutes every fortnight avoids the annual review where everything surfaces at once.

Addressing a gap early

A gap flagged once gets corrected. Flagged after six months, it has become a conflict.

Recognising precisely

« Good job » teaches nothing. Naming what was done well, and why, gets repeated.

What this path does not do

It does not turn an organisational disagreement into a management problem. Many difficulties blamed on supervision come from a lack of resources, contradictory objectives or a decision management never made. Training the manager will not fix those, and we say so rather than bank a course that cannot work.
